Upstairs, there's a modern section that complements the Kunstsammlung, along with heavy stuff from the nineteenth-century Düsseldorf Academy.

Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen Lovers of painting will be more than rewarded at this collection. The Kunstsammlung NRW is housed in an ultramodern gallery in Grabbeplatz. The collection began with an act of contrition: in atonement for the dismissal of Paul Klee from his professorship at the Düsseldorf Academy in the Nazi purges of 1933, around 90 of his works were bought by the city in 1960. Klee remains the big attraction, but later acquisitions have turned the museum into a who's who of modern painting.
