It is easy to travel in Trier. You just can walk trough the center of the city from north to south or from east to west in 30 minutes. But this is only walking straight - what you should do is take some more time and stroll from the Porta Nigra (8 min walk from train station) through the Simeon Street (passing by the Judengasse with old jewish houses) to the Medieval Hauptmarkt to the cathedral and then to the Roman Basilika and the Palast garden. Don't forget to sit down somewhere and have a glass of famous Mosel Wine! - For example in front of the cathedral at Palais Kesselstatt.
Car parking possibilities:
Just recently the city installed a “Parkleitsystem” – signs in the main streets show you where (and how many) there are still parking facilities available. That is really handy, especially on saturdays, when the city usually is overcrowded. Parking garages are: Kaufhof, City Parkhaus, Viehmarktparkhaus, Mustorparkhaus, Treveris-Parkhaus. Open air parking places you will find in Metzelstrasse, Konstantinstrasse, Engelstrasse, Simeonstiftplatz, Walramsneustrasse and Mustorstrasse.
Public transports:
Of interest to those who wish to see Trier without having to look for parking is the Trier 24-hour ticket: valid for 24 hours following time of first use for one adult and up to four children under age 15. Also at a reasonable price is the family 24-hour ticket: same conditions but for two adults and up to four children under 15. Both tickets can also be purchased for the entire bus network, which reaches far into the countryside (unlimited transfers). Inside the city the bus system is working quite good, to reach the suburbs by bus takes some more time. Be patient.
By bike:
As far as you won't go up the hills (or you need strong muscles and a long breath - and probably a shower afterwards) a bike is another good option to explore the city. Although cycling in the very inner city streets is forbidden, you will always find pathes to go and (more important) safe places to lock your bike. One of the nicest ways to get an impression of the region surrounding Trier is to cycle along the Mosel river towards Pfalzel (8 km) or Schweich (14 km) down the river or towards Wasserbillig (already Luxembourg, but only 13 km off) or towards Konz (9 km) and then maybe head for Saarburg (another 12 km) up the Saar river.
