City sightseeing tour
Follow the red line through Hannover. This line, 4200 meters long, is painted of the pavement and leads to 36 sights in the downtown of Hannover. A picture book on the red line is available at Hannover Tourist Information (Tel. 0511/314-20, -21, -22).

The sightseeing tour leads, among others, to the New Town Hall, here you can take the opportunity for a visit. Inside the New Town Hall, there are City models of 4 phases of the development of Hannover. An inclined lift leads you to a view platform from where you can e, njoy a magnificent view over wide parts of Hannover.

Those who prefer to take a ride, might choose the two-and-a-half-hours sightseeing tour in a modern coach. The coach passes the Old and the New Town Hall, the Leine Castle, the Marktkirche, the Opera House and many other sights, as e.g. the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen. However, you should combine the sightseeing tour with a tour to the EXPO terrain, where the world exposition EXPO2000 will take place next year. You can receive further information on sightseeing tours, by coach or individually, at Hannover Tourist Information.

On Saturdays, you should combine an individual sightseeing tour with a visit of Hannover's flea market, situated at the banks of the river Leine, near the old town. Here you can find everything: From junk and kitsch up to real antiques.

Herrenhäuser Gärten and Zoo
Starting from Königsworther Platz, the tour guides through the Georgengarten, a very beautiful parkway, passing the Wilhelm Busch museum, until reaching the Großer Garten. During a visit at the Großer Garten, unique baroque gardening artwork can be admired. Numerous fountains and wells can be seen between the expensively created beds and hedges; in the centre of the Großer Garten, the big fountain ejects a jet of water, several meters high, into the sky. Inform yourself about the international fireworks contest at Hannover Tourist Information. In the summer months, different nations compete against each other with gigantic fireworks, accompanied with background music.

Across the Großer Garten, there is the Berggarten, where a unique collection of plants from all over the world can be found. Here you can admire unique orchid and cactus collections. In the afternoon, a visit of the Hannover zoo shouldn't be missed. Expensively restored and redesigned, it arises from its shadowy existence and presents a zoological landscape of the future, with the Sambaal savannah terrain of the new carnivore enclosure, and the jungle palace. The times of narrow cages is over; here, it is not any longer the "exhibit" animal which is in the foreground, but the presentation of animals in their different natural biotopes. At different times of day, the training results of the keepers and their protegees can be admired.

Historical buildings in the Hannover region
The Marienburg (Tel. 05069/407 and 535) is one of the most remarkable sights in the area of Hannover. It bears, among other things, pictures, furniture, chinaware, objects of art, arms, flags, historical documents of the Guelphs, the kingdom of Hannover and the duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. As alternative to this, the Royal Hunting Lodge Springe (Tel. 05041/2022), located to the North of "Kleiner Deister" hills, invites for a visit. Built in the mid of the 19th century, it was the residence of the Hannoveranian royal family during the hunting season. Today the recently renovated lodge house shows an exhibition on local wildlife.

Furthermore, there are many medieval convents and churches in the surrounding of Hannover, e.g. the Augustinian nunneries in Barsinghausen and in Wennigsen; the church in Idensen or the Romanesque basilica from 12th century, in Ronnenberg, are well worth a visit, too.

Daytrip to Celle
Celle is a city full of contrasts. The 700-year-old framework town offers modern life besides picturesque facades. If you visit the city, you should not forget, apart from a stroll through the old town, to visit the Celler Herrenschloss, the building of which started in 1527. The renaissance building, surrounded by ditches, formerly was the centre and the nucleus of Celle. Inside, you can find the Schlosstheater; built 1695, it is the oldest preserved theatre in Germany. Here, different plays are performed regularly.

In the afternoon, the "Celler Badeland" invites the whole family for having swimming fun. On a surface of about six football fields, you can find seven swimming pools and whirlpools, inside and outside, saunas, a giant shoot and numerous sports facilities. The "Badeland" will make you feel as if you were in holidays. A restaurant with sun terrace, a bistro and a kiosk are there for catering purposes. Those who like to prepare their meals for themselves, may sizzle the food they brought on a large electric barbecue.
