Frankfurt has what you expect, a wealth of gastronomic possibilities, from trendy Westside bars to the cheapo Italian restaurants of Bockenheim, the working class and student quarter. Local specialties such as Ebbelwoi (apple wine) or Handkäs mit Musik (special cheese with vinegar sauce) you will find here on every corner.

The main region to get cheap food is between the Rathenauplatze and the Opernplatz, just north of the centre. The Grosse Bockenheimerstrasse and the Kalbaecherstrasse are locally known as Fressgasse, which means so much as "munching alley". Near Zeil and Römerberg there are also some good places, as well as in Bockenheim.
