Germany

Trier is not the world's most famous place for eating out but nevertheless you can find a lot of nice restaurants here! Don`t forget to order some german beer (in Trier locals normally drink Bitburger), one of the famous local white wines (from the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer) or even Viez (have a look at the trier, wine:wine section!). However, Trier has a number of good restaurants, often with a delightful view (as the Weisshaus) or in historical surroundings (as the Kesselstatt, the Brunnenhof, or the Central-Hotel restaurants).

A fascinating menu is offered in the Domstein restaurant opposite the Cathedral: Eating like the Romans did. The top restaurants in Trier are the restaurant in the Dorint Hotel opposite the Porta Nigra and the Pfeffermühle next to the Zurlauben docks. Besides this you will find a lot of rather good pizzerias, Chinese restaurants and original Trierish restaurants. Very popular student restaurants are the ASTARIX, the Schwach&Sinn or the Textorium inside the Tuchfabrik.

Inflagranti
Lovely "Kneipe" with excellent kitchen (delicious, huge, cheap), nice crowd (and dogs) hanging around having a beer while chatting with the waitresses.
Address: Viehmarktplatz 13

Schwach&Sinn
Small restaurant with nice garden and left-winged crowd, they offer informations about political news and demonstrations as well as really good food ("Auflauf") and cheap prices.
Address: Maxinimstrasse 17
Tel:

Glocke
Old Trierish Pub, where you will find both tourists and locals. Dishes are large and plain, try the onion soup.
Address: Glockenstrasse 12
Tel:

Domstein
Traditional Trierish restaurant with a large menue and one unique offer: eating like the Romans did. Dishes are cooked according to the only surviving Roman cookbook (Apicius) and served in the Roman Wine Cellar.
Address: Hauptmarkt
Tel:

Krim
Great mixture between elegance and student restaurant. They have two sections; in the front bistro-like, in the back more restaurant style. You can sit outside in summertime. Sometimes they have something like Spanish, Balkan or French week, then the food is really remarkable!
Address: Glockengasse (pedestrian precinct)
Tel:

Zum Moselaner
This is the only, but a really outstanding Thai restaurant. It is located close to the river Mosel in Zewen in a former club home, about 3 km out of the city direction to Luxembourg. You need preferably a car to reach it. The food is really authentic. Spices are imported partly directly from Thailand and you can really taste the difference to the Chinese cuisine. Do not forget to reserve a table. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

ASTARIX
A student restaurant with a 20 years old tradition. Great food, small prices. Cosy atmosphere. (Yes, even the older looking folks are students, still) In summertime you can sit outside. You will find it behind the theatre or just ask, everyone knows.
Address:

Frankenturm
The Frankenturm is already mentioned in the Hotel-section. A good restaurant both german and international food. Also for just having a beer or something in the evening. Crowd is mixed: young and older people, students and local workers.
Address: Dietrichstrasse (pedestrian precinct)
Tel:

Krokodil
Good german-style food. Not really cheap, not very expensive.
Address: Nikolaus-Koch-Platz
Tel:

Handelshof
Rustic atmosphere, plain German food, lots of wood but (normally) no students.
Address: Lorenz-Kellner-Strasse
Tel:

Ganesha
Trier is not a HQ of Indian food, but can be very happy with the Ganesha Restaurant. Very good food, nice atmosphere (elegant!). The service is a bit slow, the prices slightly higher than in the average Pizzaria. But really worth it. Tuesday closed!

Tel: +49 – 651 - 99 444

Taverna Chalkidiki
After being in business for more than a year the Greek restaurant run by the family Fardelas has now becoming popular with lovers of the Mediteranean cuisine. Great fish dishes are served.
